Chapter 8

VALENTINA

I wake from a fitful nap only to find myself pressed against Theodore’s chest and Evelyn wrapped around my back. It’s a comfortable heat, the blanket pulled over us as I snuggle in a little further, only to find Theodore staring down at me. It’s strange how many things have changed in such a short time. Especially how much I didn’t know I needed a night like this. Theodore hasn’t fallen apart like that in months and while society would tell me that I should be ashamed, I feel whole when Evelyn is also in the room.

She’s always been the missing piece in this relationship and we both know it.

Theodore leans forward to press a soft kiss to the bridge of my nose as he swipes a stray lock behind my ear. “I haven’t seen that smile on your face for a while, Valentina.”

“Is it wrong?”

Theodore’s gaze travels to the woman we both love who’s currently snoring away. I’m not sure when we moved positions but I quite like her breasts smushed against my back like this, her leg thrown up over my waist and dangling over Theodore’s. Like she’s simultaneously claiming and protecting us from a world we have all been thrust into.

“It’s not wrong, love. It’s never wrong. Different? Uncommon? Sure. But not wrong.” With each word, he presses more kisses to my face but he knows that's not what I’m asking. I’m not asking if our love is wrong. I’m asking if loving her more is wrong—the fact that we both want her more than each other despite the hand that fate has dealt us. “It’ll work out, Valentina. For now, sleep.”

I close my eyes but I don’t miss his whispered words, “I hope it works out.” Unlike many of the other times, he’s not certain. None of us are. No country that I know of has succeeded with three rulers and how would that even work when Evelyn is third in line for the Kusovanian throne? How could she rule another country while still having to stand in for her own? There’s too much chaos running around in my thoughts to be dealt with so I try to sleep, thinking of ways to ensure that we get our happily ever after.

But how feasible is that really when everything is working against us?

We have days to prove to Kusovania that we are no longer a threat and even less time to shoo away Evelyn’s suitors before one makes their interest public.
